Underwater Sensor Networks

The project aims to develop and introduce low-cost, easy to deploy short-range sensor networks divers in shallow water environments such as rivers, bays, lakes and reservoirs. Since radio waves are just going into the water, the project is based on sound waves to communicate. In order to provide low-cost but durable network of pairs of acoustic modem communication system that works for microphones and speakers, as well as general software sensor modules that were built last year. Nodes under water to collect environmental data and sends the data to the surface of the base, which collects the data streams, and the radio link for wireless broadband to a central server on the beach. The server should support multiple tools, viewing, downloading and analysis of sensor data in near real time.

Development following a bottom-up, the design of physical connections (software modulation, synchronization, etc..). Designing a suitable successor for the MAC and routing protocols. At the same time the development of these mechanisms, networking, application-level process modules of the information contained in the central server is also developed. Students involved in this project included the development of one or more of these layers according to their strength, and according to their preferences.
